Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is a part of the Western Ghats (Sahyadri Ranges) and has an area of 131 km² (51 sq mi). It is recognized as one of the 12 biodiversity hotspots of the world 1. The sanctuary was created in the Ambegaon and Khed talukas of Pune District, in the Western Indian state of Maharashtra, mainly to protect the habitat of the Indian Giant Squirrel 1. It spreads through 3 districts of Maharashtra: Pune District, Raigad District & Thane District
